Who occupied West Germany after World War II, and what form of government was installed there?

United States; Democracy

After World War II, Germany was divided into zones controlled by the Allies. The western zones were administered by the United States, along with Britain and France, as they helped rebuild and shape a new political system there. They established a democratic framework, culminating in the creation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949, a constitutional democracy with a parliamentary system, free elections, and guaranteed rights. This is why the West German arrangement fits the idea of occupation by Western Allies with a democratic government. (East Germany, by contrast, was under the Soviet Union and developed a communist system.)

Soviet Union; Communist

United Kingdom; Constitutional Monarchy

France; Republic
